This sprawling setting of Psalm 113 is scored in an eloquent Russian/Slavic manner for full divisi mixed choir (SSAATTBB) with soli. The music makes use of changing and contrasting textures and sonorities: treble and men's voices antiphonally, solo quartet, four-part choir, eight-part choir, solo voice with choral accompaniment, and fugue.
In the Jewish rite, Psalm 113 is the opening psalm in the festival liturgy known as Hallel, the theme of which is praise and thanksgiving. Encompassing Psalms 113 - 118, Hallel is recited on most of the major and minor festivals of the Jewish calendar.
