Like "Lift High Your Lintels," Psalm 29
is a stirring 19th-Century style grand processional. The text is
vividly pictorial, and while the first sections of this work are
straightforward in texture, with largely homophonic choral passages and
intervening solo passages accompanied wordlessly by choir and
organ/piano, more contrapuntal complexity comes with the verse that
describes lightning bolts and thunder. A declaration of God's
eternal sovereignty by men's voices follows the third and final
solo section, and the work ends with a fervent hope for peace.
Vocally, Psalm 29 is not overly demanding either for
the choir or for the soloist. A slightly more stately tempo than
marked may be taken in the choral sections, though it is important
always that the solo sections be taken a shade slower than the
surrounding choral passages, except where otherwise noted in the score.
