This soul-stirring choral rendition of the Twenty-Third Psalm is colored in cool verdant tones of tranquil introspection, with the gentle piano providing a pictorialization of quiet waters. The gently dappled mood of the opening section leads to the quietly impassioned central passage (largely a cappella in the SATB version), followed by a return to the quietly flowing stream of the beginning, reaching its apex beginning on the phrase "My cup overflows". A slow denouement on the final verse brings this thoughtful and reflective setting to a close.
This work should be governed in performance by a
quiet and restrained expression, and an overall sense of legato line.
Its somber, burnished coloration makes it most suitable for funeral and
memorial use. Specified sections of each version (as indicated in
the score) may be performed by solo voices, and the 2-part version may
be sung entirely as a solo duet.
