The recitation of S'lichot, the penitential liturgy, begins the Saturday night at least four days prior to Rosh Hashanah, inaugurating the autumn season of the Yamim Noraim or "Days of Awe."
Purpose. It was my aim to explore my passion for Baroque music, and my perception of a certain affinity between Baroque and Jewish musical modes, by composing settings for this beautiful and solemn liturgy in this style. Since S'lichot prayers are recited only on regular weekdays, on which there is no particular restriction against the use of musical instruments, it seemed the perfect occasion to clothe these texts in the orchestral colors of the Baroque.
This work does not represent an attempt at complete faithfulness to Baroque style and form, although I have tried to utilize many of the forms and procedures associated with this era while making use of some of the characteristic chant and folk modes associated with this season of Jewish observance.
I have not endeavored to set all the prayers in this extensive liturgy, but have chosen many of the most commonly included prayers.
Use. A Baroque S'lichot is intended either for performance as a complete work (most likely for concert performance, perhaps as a prelude to the actual liturgical service), or as individual movements to be sung throughout the actual service. Each of the 29 movements may be performed either with instrumental ensemble or with piano only. Several of the numbers may be sung a cappella. As many or as few numbers may be performed as needed.*
Challange Level. Much of the music in A Baroque S'lichot is at least moderately challnging. The choral passages are often highly polyphonic. Reasonably accomplished professional-level instrumentalists are required, particularly for the considerable solo work on the oboe, bassoon, violin and cello, as well as for the often dense and florid harpsichord parts and piano reductions.
Instrumentation. A Baroque S'lichot is scored for a small ensemble consisting of at minumum: 1 oboe, 1 bassoon, 2 first violin, 2 second violin, 2 viola, 1 cello, 1 string bass and 1 keyboardist alternating between chamber organ and harpsichord. These numbers may be expanded as necessary for use with a larger choral ensemble.
Keyboard. If possible, authentic Baroque style keyboard instruments (harpsichord and chamber organ) should be used. Alternatively, a digital keyboard using high-quality digital samplings of these instruments may be substituted.
Continuo Organ. It is important that the organ sound be characteristic of authentic Baroque style, which is to say, the very quiet diaphanous 8' "flute stop" sound of a small continuo organ. This can be demonstrated in any number of performances (to be found on YouTube) of Bach cantatas, Handel sacred works, and other works by Telemann and other composers of the era. Generally, the organ in this present work is intended as a quiet background instrument to support and enrich the harmonies.
Use of Piano. Piano reductions (see piano-vocal score) have been made for all movements for use ONLY in place of the instrumental ensemble. A classical-style acoustic grand piano is the preferred sound here.
Chorus. Depending on the vocal capabilities of the singers, the choral ensemble might be as small as 10 to 20 voices, but must of course be heard over the instruments. This work is, in essence, to be thought of as a chamber work.
Solo Voices. As an ideal preference, specific voice types are indicated for arias and recitatives, although there is some flexibility here.
Demonstration Videos. Each movement may be heard via the YouTube links in full orchestral version, and seen with piano-vocal score animation. Videos are captioned with English text translations.
