List of Works for Cantor and Choir
by Michael Reid Winikoff
In some cases such as Aleinu "Hagadol", Hatzi Kaddish or Psalm 29, liturgical tradition dictates that the solo be taken by the cantor or other soloist acting as prayer leader or sh'liach. In the case of other works such as Hashkiveinu (1989), Uv'shofar Gadol or V'al Y'dei, even though there is no procedural requirement that the solo material be sung by a cantor, the solo material is specifically "cantorial" in style and therefore perhaps best suited to a hazzan or other soloist who is well-versed in that style. In still other instances, solo passages are neither liturgically nor stylistically specific, and so might more easily be taken either by the cantor or by any capable soloist.
