Jewish Choral Music for Men's Voices (TTBB)
by Michael Reid Winikoff
The alternate men's-voice versions of these pieces are designed in part to
accommodate the
customs and traditions of the Orthodox Jewish community. One hopes
for the time, in the context of those traditions, when the vocal and
musical training of boy sopranos and altos will reach a level in that
community to permit performance of mixed-voice (SATB) music by men and
boys. Until such time, these men's-voice versions are the
practical alternative.
In performing these arrangements, it is essential that close
attention be paid to specific dynamic (volume) markings from one voice
part to another. This is necessitated by the acoustic realities of
the overall TTBB sonority, which lacks the broad range and contrast in tambour
that naturally exists between treble and adult male voices, making it
much thicker and denser. Therefore, melodic lines
must be more carefully brought out through differentiated dynamics.
Not included on this list of published TTBB versions is Adon Olam, which
may be
adapted to men's voices.
