THE HEBREW TEXT - This passage constitutes the common core text of four counterpart prayers found throughout the liturgy of Sabbath and holy days, and known functionally as k’dushat hayom (“sanctity of the day”). The occasion-specific versions are:
OCCASION: | PRAYER: |
Shabbat: Pesach, Shavuot, Sukkot: Rosh Hashanah: Yom Kippur: |
R’tzei vimnuchateinu V'hasieinu M'loch al kol ha-olam M'chal la-avonoteinu |
THE MUSIC - This setting in modernist style is textually and, for the most part,
musically non-specific to any of these occasions, though it does make
subtle allusion (at bars 10-11, 14-15, and 21-22) to Friday evening
nusach.
The tempo should be warmly, expressively rubato, with a fluid
give-and-take feeling throughout.
