THE TEXT IN LITURGY - Pit-chu Li is a pair of lovely verses from Psalm 118, and is a favorite subject for special musical treatment (such as the celebrated melody by Shlomo Carlebach) by its presence in the Hallel liturgy recited on many of the major and minor festivals of the Jewish year.
THE MUSIC / PERFORMANCE - The present setting is in
four parts, but it's two main melodic ideas (soprano and tenor lines)
are adaptable for congregational unison or 2-part performance. The
four-part version may also be adapted for men's (TTBB) voices as
follows:
Soprano (melody) - sung by Tenor II
Alto - sung by Bass I
Tenor - sung by Tenor I
Bass - sung by Bass II
In all cases, the piano part is optional.
Pit-chu li sha-a-rei Tzedek Avovam odeh Yah; Zeh hasha-ar l'A-donay Tza-di-kim yavo-u vo. |
Open for me the gates of righteousness That I may enter them and praise A-donay; This is the gateway of A-donay, The righteous shall enter therein. |
