S'U SH'ARIM (Psalm 24: 7-10)
by Michael Reid Winikoff

SATB, optional organ
Hebrew or English Singing Text
Weekday Morning Service - High Holy Days and Festivals

DURATION: 3:20 (with no repeats)                                                       Purchase
-- Listen/View
-- Listen Only (faster load)

THE LITURGICAL TEXT - For festivals and holy days occuring on weekdays, the final processional of the Torah scrolls before their replacement in the Holy Ark is accompanied by the chanting of Psalm 24, with these final four verses, S'u Sh'arim (often rendered S'u Shearim), being perhaps the most famous.

MUSIC / PERFORMANCE - Consistent with that purpose, this setting of verses 7-10 of Psalm 24 is cast as a magisterial grand processional. In addition to the final ending, there are repetition options to telescope the piece to greater length as needed.  S'u Sh'arim is somewhat challenging for its range and harmonic complexities.

Challenge level - 4 out of 6 stars

                                       LINE-BY-LINE TRANSLATION

S'u sh'arim rasheichem
V'hinas'u pitchei olam
V'yavo melech hakavod.
Mi ze melech hakavod?
A-donay izuz v'gibor
A-donay gibor milchamah.
S'u sh'arim rasheichem
Us'u pitchei olam
V'yavo melech hakavod.
Mi hu ze melech hakavod?
A-donay tz'va-ot
Hu melech hakavod.  Selah.
Lift up your heads O ye gates
And be lifted up O ye doors everlasting,
That the Sovereign of glory may enter.
Who is this Sovereign of glory?
The Lord of power and strength,
The Lord mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads O ye gates
And be lifted up O ye doors everlasting,
That the Sovereign of glory may enter.
Who is He, this Sovereign of glory?
The Lord of hosts,
He is the Sovereign of glory.  Selah.
