A BAROQUE S'LICHOT
by Michael Reid Winikoff
TO BE PUBLISHED SOON
S'lichot ("forgivenesses") are prayers of penitence and supplication recited in the late-night hours beginning on the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah.
A Baroque S'lichot is a service consisting of approximately 28 separate numbers, and makes use both of certain procedures of the Baroque period and of traditional nusach (chant modes) associated with the High Holy Days. It is scored for soloists, chorus and small instrumental ensemble of as few as 11 players.
It may also be sung with piano only, and certain movements* may be performed a cappella. It may regarded as a resource from which individual movements may be lifted for use by themselves. A few numbers are congregation-friendly.++
