About THE PRAYER
THE MUSIC - In contrast to my earlier setting,
Hashkiveinu (1989), Hashkiveinu Night Prayer has
the almost hypnotic feel of a lullaby throughout, with a recurring
lyrical, aria-like melody that morphs organically in various ways
according to the text. While it has little of the traditional
florid style of cantorial singing (hazzanut) of the
other rendition, the music is nonetheless firmly rooted in the Friday
evening nusach.
